Rent Guidelines in New York

In “AM New York” of May 10, 2006 I was quoted to have said relative to the Rent Guidelines Board:

“Nobody believes that they aren’t going to get as close to 8.5% as they can.”

The paper, by this quote, depicts a fatalistic opinion of the circumstances. Such was not my intent.

The purport of the quote was to arouse indolent rent regulated tenants of this our City. They must wake up in anger to stop this slaughter. The reader of this Alert must:

a.   Run, do not walk, to each of your representative politicians pounding on the office door by letters, faxes, and e-mails.

b.   Write off the Pataki and Bloomberg administrations and must scream to Spitzer that he must appear at the Public Hearings to protest and speak of the harm of the outrageous rent increases being enjoyed by the landlords of this City and to pledge a new day of rent regulation.

c.   Send the same message to those who would seek to be our Attorney General.

This is a crisis point in regulatory housing. The landlords seek the goal of $2,000 a month as deregulated Valhalla no matter the hovel of an apartment.

The tenants have only one way to stop this train. Tenants must now organize around the standing tenant advocacy organizations such as:

Met Council Tenants and Neighbors

QLOUT in Queens County

and must sign up to speak at the Public Hearings in June before the final rent guidelines are voted.

I refrain from providing numbers to call.  I want you to get off your duff and go looking for tenant advocates.  If you have to work at this you may understand and appreciate the need to join, support and do something positive to protect decent and affordable regulatory housing in this our City.
