EVICTION

  YOU OWE ME

You Owe Me

You owe me when you read my website.  You do not owe me money.  You owe me an obligation to re-energize the tenants' movement.

Today the leaders of the tenants' movement are at least close to the age of AARP.  Most of them have already collected social security for many years.

Now what steps can you take to get in this most important game.

Step 1

Learn who is representing you in the City Council.  Learn who represents you in the Assembly.  Learn who represents you in the State Senate.

Step 2

Any of the above should be able to introduce you to tenant organizers.

Step 3

It is now time to get active and form your tenants organization (see my section on Forming a Tenant Association).

Step 4

Once you have a tenants association it is time to have your tenants association become a member of a known tenants coalition:

Statewide                                 New York Tenants and Neighbors

            Citywide                                   Met Council

In Queens County                     The Queens League of United Tenants (QLOUT)

Step 5

Your representatives through these coalitions are going to aid in:

            a)         planning demonstrations

            b)         meeting with legislators

c)         attending conferences

                        d)         testifying before administrative and legislative committees as to various housing concerns

                        e)         working with lawyers to frame policy papers to suggest legislation

Conclusion

There can be no dispute that the leaders in the tenants movement over a period of some forty/fifty years have had significant effect in protecting rent regulated homes and that hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours were devoted to that cause.

We need new blood and hence this call for recruitment.
